Reading Notes: Epified Mahabharata, Part B

Episode Nine opens with a summary of what happened in the last episode, and tells the story of Kunti's secret, that she had a child with the sun god Suryadev. He was born with golden earrings and was armored. Because she was unmarried, she knew that she would be unable to keep him, so she placed him in a basket and floated him down a river.

In the next episode, Pandu and his wives decide to spend some time in the forest together. Pandu decided to go hunting, and while hunting he shot an arrow at a hermit couple who were making love. Because of this, as the hermit died he decided to curse Pandu that the moment he became intimate with another woman, he would die. Kunti decided to tell Pandu of the mantra she'd been give that would allow her to summon any god and bear the god's child. Pandu was glad to hear of this because Hastinapura would be given a line of succession. She had 3 sons : Yuhistira, Bhima, and Arjuna. But Madri was without children, so Kunti agreed to use the mantra one last time to summon the Aswin twins for her. As a result Madri gave birth to 2 sons. After awhile, as the boys grew, Pandu's curse finally came to fruition as he tried to be intimate with Madri in a moment of passion. Pandu died, and as he was being cremated Madri decided to share her husband's fate and went into the fire as well. A few months later, Kunti and the five Pandevas left the forest to return to Hastinapura.

Meanwhile, Ghandari became pregnant, and had a troubled pregnancy. She gave birth eventually to a huge lump of flesh. Ved Vyasa ordered the flesh to not be gotten ride of, but instead the flesh was divided into 100 lumps and placed into 100 vats of oil, and these grew to become children. Dark omens surrounded these children.

As the boys grew together Duryoduna became resentful of Bhima, and eventaully invited the Pandevas to a lakeside retreat. There, he served food laced with poison. As Bhima slept, Duryodanha tied his hands and feet and pushed him into the lake. As he fell, he was bitten by snakes, and the venom of the snakes actually woke him up. Bhima broke free of his bonds and attacked the snakes. Eventually he was in the kingdom of the Nagas, and the King of the Nagas gave him a powerful potion to make him very strong. Bhima, now aware of the danger that he and his brothers were in, left for the surface.
