Week 3 Story: The Mighty Lion

The Mighty Lion

Once there was a mighty lion named Rakashma, and he lived as a prince in the jungle. Now this lion was strong and mighty, so few dared to challenge him. One day, he came across the most beautiful lioness in all of the jungle, she was a princess of a neighboring land. He knew the moment he laid his eyes upon her that he wanted her to be his queen. This lioness was named Sataria.

Sataria the Lioness

He went to her father, the mighty king Makata, in hopes that he might have ask the king for his daughters hand in marriage. When Rakashma introduced himself and asked if he could marry Sataria, the king pondered the request for a moment.

King Makata

"You may do this," the King replied, "if you can successfully complete the challenge. In order to win the right to marry Sataria, you must pass the test of taking down The Great Elephant, who resides in the lands near here. If you can do this, the you will be able to marry Sataria."

"Let it be so, I shall hunt down this elephant as you command, Your Majesty," Rakashma replied. And so he left to complete his task.

The Great Elephant

When Rakashma came upon the Great Elephant, he first noticed his massive size. Momentarily, he doubted whether he would be able to bring down this giant beast. He immediately shoved those thougths aside, he needed to focus if he was going to succeed. Staying low to the ground, he cautiously approached the elephant, not making a sound. Finally, when he was within stricking distance, he pounced at the creature!

After a momentary struggle, Rakashma emerged the victor, successfully bringing down The Great Elephant. As proof of his victory here, he broke off one of the tusks and dragged it in his mouth back to King Mataka.

King Mataka was suprised to see Rakashma back, and with the tusk of the Great Elephant in his maw. Pleased with this proof of the deed, however, the King honored his agreement to Rakashma, allowing him to marry Sataria.

And so the pair were wed, and they lived happily together for the rest of their lives.

Rakashma and Sataria

Authors Note: This story is based on the story in the Ramayana (PDE) of how Rama wins his bride Sita. In the version I read he had to draw the bow of Shiva in order to win her, in this version, since animals can't use weapons, I had him complete a different challenge. I also decided to make the characters animals, and change the names a bit. Rakashma is based on Rama, and Sataria is based on Sita, though we don't hear her speak in this story. Mataka is  based on Sita's father Janak.

  1. Until I read the authors note, I had no idea that this was based off the story of Rama and Sita. I think how you interpreted it was incredibly well done and was something new. I am excited to read what other stories you have.

One criticism that I have is the amount of photos you used. I enjoyed that you gave each character a "face" so to say, but it briefly interrupted the flow of the story.

  2. I really love how creative you got this this story. Also all of the pictures you included really added to the story. It was cool to see the animals you were describing. You really took the love story of Rama and Sita and really made it your own. And I like how you changed it to be something that you really liked and something that you could enjoy writing.

  3. Hi Jackie! When I first started reading your story, I figured it was about Rama and Sits based on Sataria's name. One criticism I have, is that he asks for her hand in marriage rather than her paw, haha! What made you decide to use lions?Overall, the change from humans to animals was a good translation and made for a story that I really enjoyed reading!
